UFC Results: Vannata and Teymur Throw Down In Amazing Co-Main Event

Ultimate Fighting Championship suffered a major blow on Friday afternoon when it was revealed that the co-main event bout had been scrapped. Khabib Nurmagomedov’s weight-cut issues caused him to fall ill the night before weigh-ins and officials could not come to terms with Tony Ferguson and a suitable replacement in time.

As a result of all this drama, David Teymur and Lando Vannata were elevated to co-main event status. Vannata’s offense was as flashy and effective as ever, but Teymur’s constant level changing kept Vannata guessing where he was going to strike next. The fact that Teymur kept Vannata at a safe distance away for so long made it so “Groovy” could not land his unique offense as often as he wanted.

Vannata was as loose as anybody could be moments into the fight, forcing Teymur to circle around the octagon and pick his shot at Vannata’s pace.

Vannata caught Teymur off guard with a cartwheel kick, but Teymur pushed through it and actually cracked Vannata twice. Vannata felt the power of Teymur and slowed down his pace, approaching from safer angles than usual. A short-range elbow from Vannata cracked Teymur, but Teymur ate it and pushed forward to crack Vannata with a straight of his own where the opening round ended.

Both Teymur and Vannata picked up the same pace at the start of the second that they fired off in the first. The first hard shot of the round landed when Teymur dug into the body of Vannata with two vicious knees. A Superman Punch from Teymur landed flush on the nose of Vannata who had no choice but to acknowledge the shot, giving Teymur a nod for respect. In a round that saw Teymur dominating, Vannata landed his fair share of unique shots toward the end of the round.

Teymur continued to attack from a distance, keeping Vannata far away enough to where he couldn’t land any shots flush. Teymur was able to secure two takedowns in the final round and while he could not do anything with them, it could have meant a lot in the eyes of the judges in such a close fight. Teymur, again, changed the pace on Vannata in the final round and after striking heavy for a minute shot and secured a fourth takedown in the bout.

David Teymur def. Lando Vannata by way of Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
