UFC Results: Volkanovski Earns Victory Against Hirota In Main Card Opener


On Saturday night, the UFC returned to the land down under for an exciting Fight Night event in Auckland, New Zealand.

In the main event, two of the best heavyweights in the UFC were set to do battle as Mark Hunt fought Derrick Lewis.

But before the pivotal heavyweight battle, the UFC once again featured a full night of intriguing bouts.

A featherweight showcase opened the main card as Alexander Volkanovski fought Mizuto Hirota.

Hirota controlled the cage at the start of the fight. Volkanovski eventually landed a strong right hand and followed it with a takedown attempt. He failed to get him down but he managed to get his opponent up against the cage. Volkanovski then dropped his opponent with a powerful punch. Hirota then used a leg lock attempt to get back to his feet. Volkanovski then secured a takedown, but Hirota quickly got to his feet. Towards the end of the round, Volkanovski landed another takedown. The round ended with Volkanovski and Hirota trading blows.

Volkanovski went for a takedown at the start of the middle round, but couldn’t get Hirota off of his feet. Volkanovski briefly rocked Hirota but he quickly recovered. Volkanovski continued to land the clearest shots throughout the second round. Hirota started to become more successful with his strikes towards the end of the round. Volkanovski took Hirota down in the final seconds of the round and finished the round landing shots on the ground.

Hirota started the final round as the aggressor. Volkanovski landed multiple spinning back elbows throughout the fight, but they didn’t phase Hirota. After landing a couple strikes, Hirota went for a takedown but failed. Both fighters went for takedowns and were unsuccessful in the last round. The fight ended with both fighters landing combinations, and Volkanovski going for one last takedown.
