Breaking: Canelo vs. GGG II Officially Cancelled Following Failed Drug Test

One of the year’s most highly anticipated boxing events has now been cancelled.

WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, and IBO middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin and boxing phenom Canelo Alvarez first squared off back in 2017. The match ultimately went the distance, with the fight reaching a highly controversial draw decision.

Consequently, many boxing fans have been ravenously demanding a rematch between the two world class pugilists. Golovkin and Alvarez were locked down for a rematch inside the same T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. for May 5. However, the fight has since been cancelled.

Canelo Alvarez formerly announced his withdrawal from the match at a recent Las Vegas press conference. The announcement came following the wake of Alvarez’s recent failed drug test.

Alvarez claims he failed his drug test for clenbuterol due to contaminated beef. However, the Nevada Athletic Commission issued a temporary ban on the boxer all the same.

An official hearing concerning the drug test failure will be held April 10, in which Alvarez will get a chance to make his case. At any rate, it would appear that boxing fans will not be getting the rematch they have been waiting for quite yet.
