RDA Is Super Confused About The UFC’s Lightweight Title Picture

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has come forward with his thoughts on the recent changes to the main event of UFC 223.

UFC 223 is set to go down April 7 inside the Barclays Arena in Brooklyn, New York. The highly anticipated fight card will take place live on pay-per-view. However, the night’s main event has since changed.

UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson was initially set to face off against tough division contender Khabib Nurmagomedov in the night’s main event. While Ferguson is the interim champion of the division, the two fighters were set to compete for the undipsuted title.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor has been inactive since 2016, having never even defended his title. Consequently, the UFC decided to strip McGregor of his title as soon as the first punch of UFC 223’s main event was thrown.

However, Ferguson has since suffered an injury. Having torn his LCL, Ferguson is now out of UFC 223. Rather, Nurmagomedov will now be facing UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway for the undisputed title.

Despite neither fighter being either an interim or undisputed champion of the lightweight division, the two competitors will be facing off for the belt all the same. The UFC has decided to strip Ferguson of his interim title just as they plan to strip McGregor of his belt.

Taking to Twitter, former champion Rafael dos Anjos has decided to let his thoughts on the complicated matter be known.

“Let me understand, Conor is a LW Champ, Tony is a interim champ, Tony is out… The winner between Khabib and Max will be a “Inter interim Champ” of UFC?”
