Shogun Rua Officially Accepts D.C.’s Callout For A Title Fight

UFC two-division champion Daniel Cormier recently revealed that he is interested in a few fights. After having spoken Mauricio “Shogun” Rua’s name, the former UFC light heavyweight champion has come forward with his response.

Daniel Cormier called out former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar after his historic win at UFC 226. However, Lesnar will have to submit himself to six months of USADA testing in order to finish out his suspension that was dealt after his UFC 200 failed drug test.

As Cormier is looking to take another fight in the meantime, D.C. recently revealed that he will be interested in facing “Shogun” Rua. Speaking to MMA Fighting, Rua has offered his response.

“I think Cormier is a great athlete, a compete fighter.Winning this fight I absolutely deserve this chance because of my history and my career in MMA.”

“It’s tough because he’s well-rounded, is good standing and on the ground, has one of the best wrestling in the UFC,” Rua said. “It’s tough because you have to train everything for him. It’s a big challenge, but you become a target when you have the belt because that’s what everyone dreams with.

“But I’m actually not thinking about the belt now because I have a good opponent ahead of me and I can’t think about it. The belt is my dream, of course, but I have to go step by step. I know that I will be closer if I win this fight.”

Rua is currently set to face off against Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night 134. The fight will take place July 22 in Hamburg, Germany.
