After a battle that saw both fighter’s have shining moments, Poirier was finally able to put away a very bloody Anthony Pettis in the third round at UFC Fight Night 120. The finish saw Poirier shooting in for a takedown that Pettis was able to defend, but ultimately gave his back up to Poirier. However, it was a rib injury that ultimately caused the former champion to tap out from the position.
Following the fight, Anthony’s longtime coach Duke Roufus explained what happened and why the fight was halted so abruptly.
“It was a unique move, Dustin had his legs on that body triangle a little higher, on the ribs.” Duke Roufus said in an interview when asked about the finish. “We’re optimistic about it. When I was 19, I suffered an injury that I still struggle with and that’s torn rib cartilage. When Anthony tapped on Saturday, I was worried that’s what it was.
After hearing that his UFC Fight Night opponent had suffered some injuries coming out of their fight, Dustin Poirer was all class in his message to him.
“Just got word Pettis has a few injuries from our fight. Hope you’re ok and have a speedy recovery”
