Former UFC Title Challenger Undergoing Brain Treatments, Future In Fighting Unlikely

One of the top fighters in the UFC flyweight division may be done with the sport.

UFC flyweight Ian McCall revealed on Monday that he is undergoing brain treatment to help with issues due to years of head trauma.

“I’m doing brain treatment down in San Diego that’s helping,” McCall said on a recent edition of The MMA Hour.

“Jeff Novitzky set me up with transcranial magnetic stimulation, it really does help my brain so that’s a plus. I saw a lot of bad signs, still seeing a lot of bad signs just with CTE-type stuff, TBI stuff, so it scared me. I went down there and I’m trying to fix it. Fix the depression and all the stuff that comes with that, we’ll see. I’ve got another month left.”

McCall claims that his history of drug use, along with competing in MMA, are some of the causes of his issues. Even though his MMA future is uncertain, McCall isn’t ready to say he is retired.

McCall has not fought since a decision loss to John Lineker back in 2015. McCall’s UFC career is highlighted by fighting UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson to a draw back in 2012. McCall’s fight with Johnson was in the tournament to crown the first UFC flyweight champion. In their rematch, Johnson won a decision.
