Jorge Masvidal scored the biggest victory of his MMA career on Saturday night when he defeated Donald Cerrone by second-round TKO in the co-main event at UFC on Fox 23.
Before the 43-fight veteran became a household name, he took part in street fighting in the streets of Miami. The ironic part is Masvidal participated in the bareknuckled fights in the same area as Kimbo Slice.
“Gamebred” fought then-Slice protege, “Ray” on two occasions and defeated him both times. “Ray” was the bigger and stronger fighter, but Masvidal’s technique and speed proved to be too much and “Ray” quit in both fights.
Last year, Masvidal told MMA Junkie that after the first fight, Slice took Masvidal to dinner and said the bareknuckle king couldn’t have been any nicer even though he beat Slice’s guy.
“He was going nuts. He took me out to eat dinner and at the time I was dead broke. He took me to this fancy-ass place and at the time I was like, ‘Damn, this dude’s balling.’ And it was just cool as (expletive). I thought we were going to have to do some thugged-out (expletive), like run out on the bill, but he paid for the whole thing. I was like, ‘Man, this is some crazy (expletive).'”
