UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson says he is willing to fight for a second UFC title for the right amount of money.
In an interview with NESN, Johnson was asked if he would be willing to go up in weight to fight UFC Bantamweight Champion Cody Garbrant.
“Yeah definitely, if the money’s right,” Johnson said. “It’s always about the money aspect of it, you know. I need to have an incentive to go up and do it, you know.”
However, Johnson is content staying in the flyweight division and continuing his historic title run.
“When you look at the best athletes around the world, a good example is Usain Bolt. He runs the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash every single year at the Olympics, and he breaks his own record, but no one ever tells him, ‘Why don’t you run a 400? Why don’t you run a mile? I mean, you’re fast,’ because he’s always focused on his craft, which is trying to beat his record, and that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m trying to beat my record. I’m trying to always improve myself, better myself and trying to beat Anderson Silva’s record.”
Johnson has successfully defended his UFC title on nine separate occasions. He is one title defense away from tying former UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva’s UFC record of 10 successful title defenses.
Johnson’s incredible title run has included victories over Joseph Benavidez, John Dodson, John Moraga, Ali Bagautinov, Chris Cariaso, Kyoji Horiguchi, Henry Cejudo, and Tim Elliott.
During his interview, Johnson said he wants to fight at UFC 211 on May 13 in Dallas, Texas. Johnson says he wants to fight in the co-main event with UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic defending his title against Junior dos Santos in the main event.
