Former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar celebrated his ten-year anniversary with the company on Friday when he fought Mark Bocek at UFC 67 in Feb. 2007, winning by unanimous decision. He is 15-5-1 in 21 career fights inside the octagon.
But the native of Toms River, NJ has one fight remaining on his UFC contract. While you can never say never, Edgar doesn’t anticipate leaving the only major MMA organization he’s ever known.
“I’d like to get a deal,” Edgar said on Monday’s “The MMA Hour“. “That’s what I’d like to do. Who knows what’s really gonna happen. But I would like to get a deal. I don’t really want to go anywhere else. This has been my home since the beginning. I just don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t. It’s not like we’re that far apart.”
The 35-year-old last fought at UFC 205 in November, beating Jeremy Stephens by unanimous decision. During the fight, Edgar tore his MCL and had to have surgery.
Edgar thinks a May return possibly at UFC 211 on May 13 in Dallas. He would like a fight against interim featherweight champion Max Holloway but if he fights a unification bout against champion Jose Aldo, he wouldn’t a mind getting in there against former 145-pound title challenger Ricardo Lamas.
“I think those are ones who make sense, depending on what Holloway is gonna do with Aldo, what Aldo is gonna do,” Edgar said. “Who knows?”
