The Conor McGregor vs Floyd Mayweather fight just got a step closer to reality, sort of.
Long time boxing coach Freddie Roach has come forward within an episode of Ariel Helwani’s podcast The MMA Hour about his interaction with Floyd Mayweather.
The legendary coach told Helwani, “Floyd actually came to my gym and told me, Freddie, I hear Conor talked to you.’ And I told him that he never has. He said, ‘If he reaches out and wants you to train him, I would take that job because I am going to fight him and we can all make a lot of money.'”
If Roach’s story is true, then perhaps there is hope for Mayweather meeting McGregor in some form of ring, octagon, triangle, trapezoid or whatever promotion could necessitate this exciting event.
That being said, Roach has not always thought that this fight would go down.
During the previous reign of UFC, the coach attempted to set up a fight between UFC’s Andrei Arlovski and a Klitschko brother of choice. The promotion obviously did not pan out, but Roach believes that a cross promotional bout may be possible under the new reign of UFC.
While Roach finds the fight at least possible, if not plausible, under the new reign, his opinion on McGregor’s chances of winning are a different story.
“Well, he is a pretty good striker. The thing is, Floyd is a great boxer. He is good at hitting and not getting hit. It would take a long time for Conor to get ready for a pure boxing match, But, one punch can change anything, so I am not going to count him out completely. Mayweather is the favorite, yes, but I will never count anyone out. He throws, he throws hard and he’s not afraid to throw. I like that about him. He’s sell-able, and he makes me laugh. But, when that bell rings he better be ready because he is fighting one of the best boxers of his era.”
Freddie Roach is only one of many that have brought their two cents into the Mayweather vs McGregor conversation. Yet, as a legendary coach, perhaps he knows something others don’t. The fight has yet to be officially announced.
