Boxer Luis Resto has a strong claim to be the worst cheater in the history of boxing.
In his fight against Billy Collins Jr. in 1983, Resto not only removed two inches of padding from his gloves, but the wrap he used to cover his hands had been soaked in plaster. Resto was fighting is two casts covered by lightly padded boxing gloves.
After suffering a 10-round beating from Resto, Collins suffered from blurred vision and depression until he died in a car accident nine months after the fight.
In 1986, Resto was convicted of assault, criminal possession of a weapon and conspiracy. He served 2.5 years in prison.
“I should have said something. I lived with it for 24 years. I had to let it go. I’m sorry I kept my mouth shut,” Resto said. “I went to see Collins’ ex-wife. She accepted my apology. I went to the cemetery, too, to show my respect to Billy Collins. I told Billy, ‘I’m sorry for what I did to you.'”
In 2007, Resto apologized to Collins’ widow, Andrea Collins-Nile.
“Resto was pretty much crying and said he didn’t murder Billy,” Collins-Nile said. “During the fight, Billy told [his father and trainer Billy Collins Sr.] it felt like he was getting hit with rocks. Now we know he really was getting hit with rocks. It was that much worse.”
