On Saturday, at UFC 208, Germaine de Randamie became the first ever UFC women’s featherweight champion. In the main event, De Randamie won a close decision against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm.
De Randamie dropped to her knees and was overfilled with joy after her name was announced as the new champion.
“I came to fight and she didn’t want to fight me,” De Randamie said. “I’m a brawler, I want to fight.”
This title fight did feature some controversy. At the end of two different rounds, De Randamie landed clean punches on Holm after the rounds were over. This was largely due to the referee not stepping in between the fighters immediately at the end of the round.
De Randamie apologized for the illegal blows and broke down the rest of the fight in her post-fight interview with Joe Rogan. She also revealed she plans to take some time off following her title win to get surgery on her hand.
