Earlier this week, Ultimate Fighting Championship flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson spoke out against the promotion due to his title belts. Traditionally, champions are given a new belt for every successful title defense.
However, Demetrious Johnson claims to only have a single belt. With nine title defenses under his, well, belt, the champion is asking for eight more belts. After hearing the news, UFC President Dana White has decided to comment on Johnson’s call out.
In an interview with UFC on FOX, White claimed that he is not obligated to give the champion more belts, but will hear the fighter out. “I actually don’t owe you nine belts, but we can talk.” He said, before doubling down his statement. “So I get he would like to lay out nine belts, we’ll see what we can do.”
Demetrious Johnson will be looking to defend his title from challenger Wilson Reis at UFC on FOX 24 on April 15. The champion has the potential to tie for Anderson Silva’s record of most consecutive title defenses, if “Mighty Mouse” can pull off a win in Kansas City.
