Ferguson says McGregor has a “puncher’s chance,” but it’s time to vacate the belt.
UFC lightweight contender Tony Ferguson was set to face Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov at UFC 209 for the lightweight interim title. After “The Eagle” faced weight management issues, the co-main event was cancelled.
Now, Ferguson is looking for the real lightweight belt to be thrown into the mix.
On a recent edition of UFC Tonight, Ferguson said
“If Conor wants to leave the belt, if he wants to pursue some sort of victory in the boxing world, which I don’t think he is; the dude has got a puncher’s chance. But (expletive), vacate the belt right now. Drop it, leave it where it’s at and we’ll fight for the title at International Fight Week, straight up.”
UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor is currently pursuing a cross-promotional fight with boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr., though an official announcement of the bout has not yet been made.
