The realm of mixed martial arts has been dealing with medical scares as of late. Bellator’s Matt “Meathead” Mitrione was forced out of his bout with Fedor Emelianenko over kidney stones. The medical issue forced the fighter to rush to the hospital just shy of his main event bout at Bellator 172.
Beyond that, the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s No. 1 lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov was forced out of his co-main event match with Tony Ferguson due to weight management issues. The fighter was also immediately rushed to the hospital.
Now, it would appear that another top mixed martial arts competitor nearly had a fight cancellation due to health issues. This time, former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos has spoken up about a previous health scare.
On a recent edition of The MMA Hour podcast, Rafael dos Anjos explained that he was almost pulled from his title defense match at UFC Fight Night 90 against Eddie Alvarez. “I pass out in the bathtub. I was out for like almost 3 minutes. They was about to call 911 & cancel the fight.” Rafael dos Anjos said.
Rafael dos Anjos went on to lose to Eddie Alvarez by way of a first round TKO.
