No. 1 ranked UFC middleweight contender Yoel Romero has a rich history as a decorated wrestler in his own rite. But, the MMA competitor faced a living legend in Olympic wrestling back in the summer of 2004.
In the 2004 Summer Olympics, Yoel Romero faced off against Cael Sanderson in the 84 kg freestyle wrestling semi-final. The NCAA Division 1 undefeated wrestler sank in a victory over Yoel Romero, but the MMA fighter did not go down without a fight.
While Romero finished 4th in 2004, the Cuban wrestler snagged a silver medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics. All in all, Romero has had a storied past of wrestling some of the sport’s greatest athletes.
Most recently, Romero was denied a shot at facing one of the UFC’s greatest of all time. Romero has shown interest in fighting former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. However, the former champion has since turned the contender down.
