UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley is fresh off of a successful title defense against returning opponent Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson. With his second bout against “Wonderboy” under his belt, Woodley is confident that he is on the edge of breaking out into the promotion’s next big star.
In a recent interview with BJPenn.com, as noted by Bloody Elbow, Woodley explained that he believes the UFC is lacking star power. He thinks he may be the one to break through.
“You know the UFC doesn’t have that many stars. They have a lot of great fighters, but as far as actual stars, there is not very many of them in the UFC. So with that said, I think that I am one of the guys that is right on the cusp of breaking through and becoming that star.” Woodley said.
As far as the champion’s next fight, Woodley is trying to snag a spot for this July’s International Fight Week.
“I think the UFC will put their heavy hitters on that card. I don’t know exactly what they have planned, but I talked to (UFC president) Dana (White) not too long ago, and he asked me when I want to fight, and I told him that I want to fight then. So with that said, I think that is going to be a go. That is what we are shooting for.”
