Two title fights, a few exciting all out brawls and a contentious no contest went down at last night’s UFC 211. The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) surely put on a show. But, it did not go without its controversy.
In the final preliminary bout of the night, former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez faced off against Dustin Poirier. While the two mixed martial artists put on a great fight, the bout ended in controversy.
After Alvarez pinned his opponent against the cage, the former champion began throwing down knees to Poirier’s head. To many of the night’s spectators, the strikes seemed to be illegal blows to a downed opponent. The fight came to an end, as Poirier was deemed unable to continue.
However, the bout was determined to be a no contest. Many believed the final result would be a victory for Dustin Poirier by way of Eddie Alvarez’s disqualification. The official decision has since caused some controversy.
Now, it would appear that Dustin Poirier is interested in a rematch. The fighter took to Twitter to state, “Not the way I wanted that fight to end.. sorry everyone…. @danawhite @seanshelby we have to do it again.”
