Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre was initially set to make his UFC return in a title fight against middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping. However, things have since changed.
“The Count” has been urging the former UFC welterweight champion do accept a fight date in July, while Georges St-Pierre has been pushing for a later date. The uncertainty of the next middleweight title shot has put the division in a level of unrest.
With the division’s top contenders applying pressure on the promotion to provide a title shot, UFC President Dana White has cancelled St-Pierre’s title shot return to the UFC. Now, Georges St-Pierre has provided his reasoning as to why he can’t fight in the summer.
In a recent interview with CTV News, Georges St-Pierre explained that the UFC always knew that he could not fight in the summer. “They say they can’t wait for me, but they knew before that I can’t fight in the summer. He said. The fighter then explained that he cannot take a summer bout because of his sponsorship deal.
“We’re entertainers – we have a lot of commitments. It’s important for us to have support from sponsors because we live through that. That’s part of our living… When you sign for something, you honor it,” St-Pierre said.
