Many of the top middleweight in the UFC have not been happy for the past few months.
Many middleweight fighters are upset with UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping not fighting top contenders. For weeks, Bisping was expected to defend his title against former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.
However, this week UFC President Dana White changed his mind and announced Yoel Romero will get the next shot at the UFC title.
This week, former UFC Middleweight Champion Luke Rockhold said there is no longer an incentive to fight in the UFC due to the promotion only creating “mega-fights” and no longer focusing on champions fighting top contenders.
UFC middleweight prospect Robert Whittaker agrees with the former champion.
“Rockhold makes a lot of good points,” Whittaker told BloodyElbow when responding to Rockhold’s comments.
“I would love to fight Romero or Rockhold,” Whittaker continued. “They are both great fights and hard fights, but the man who fights for no reason is a silly man. I want to move up in the rankings, I want to move closer to that belt. And at this present moment, if I fight Luke, whether I win or lose, where do I go from there? Or if I fight Yoel, I’m in the same position; I don’t make any gains. At this point, no one is going to get closer to that belt – no matter who they fight – unless you’re Michael Bisping or Georges St-Pierre. There’s no incentive to fight because there’s nowhere to go. ”
