The sport of mixed martial arts was founded on the idea of pitting different martial arts techniques against once another and seeing which one prevailed.
In 1995, during the early days of MMA becoming a recognized sport, a taekwondo specialist competed against a muay thai practitioner at the Finnish Master Cup martial arts tournament.
During the match, the taekwondo fighter struggled right from the start. The muay thai fighter used leg kicks to damage his opponent. Leg kicks are not a technique commonly defended against in taekwondo.
Throughout the contest, the taekwondo fighter showed heart, but he could not get passed his opponents devastating leg kicks. After being leg kicks numerous times, and knocked down to the flow, the muay thai fighter threw a head kicks which knocked down his opponent immediately and forced the referee to stop the contest.
