Chael Sonnen sure is excited for Bellator: NYC on June 24.
Sonnen will headline the event when he fights longtime rival Wanderlei Silva.
In the co-headliner, MMA legend Fedor Emelianenko will make his Bellator debut when he fights Matt Mitrione.
“I believe that Matt Mitrione is the greatest heavyweight fighter of this generation,” Sonnen said on a recent episode of his podcast. “It’s particularly because of Derrick Lewis. That fight didn’t look so great at the time. When Mitrione won it wasn’t that big of a deal. In fact, he was the favorite. If you look at what Derrick Lewis has done sense, what’s he ranked now? No. 5 in the world?”
Mitrione knocked out Derrick Lewis back in 2014. Since then Lewis has become one of the top heavyweights in the UFC, while Mitrione has left the UFC and has joined Bellator.
Bellator: NYC will be Bellator’s second-ever pay-per-view event. It will also be Bellator’s first event at the historic Madison Square Garden in New York City.
