UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier believes there is a different way black fighters should be marketed compared to other fighters in the UFC.
On a recent episode of UFC Tonight, Cormier said one reason why UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson isn’t a bigger draw is that the UFC struggles to market towards African Americans.
“As African Americans, you have to market people differently,” Cormier said.
Cormier also said the UFC struggles marketing small guys, and with Johnson being a combination of the two, the UFC struggles even more. He said the UFC needs to start being more creative when it comes to marketing the flyweight champion.
Johnson has publically shared his disdain for the UFC after the promotion tried to bully him into taking a fight against former bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw. Johnson says UFC President Dana White threatened to cancel the flyweight division if Johnson didn’t take the fight.
Cormier is scheduled to defend his championship against former champion Jon Jones on July 29 at UFC 214.
