The dream bout is now a reality, UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor is set to fight Floyd “Money” Mayweather on Aug. 26.
On Wednesday, all the parties involved confirmed that the two will compete in a boxing match at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
After the fight was announced, UFC President Dana White took the time to talk to the media about this historic fight announcement.
White said if McGregor managed to defeat Mayweather, he will become the most popular athlete on the planet.
“If you look at this thing and you look at how big this fight is and you look at how big these athletes are that are involved in this fight, if Conor does knock Floyd Mayweather out, he is the biggest athlete on earth,” White said. “He’s the biggest athlete (on this planet), on other planets, he’s the biggest athlete. It’s pretty crazy.”
McGregor will be making his professional boxing debut when he fights Mayweather. After being retired for almost two years, Mayweather is returning to the sport and competing for the 50th time as a professional. He is currently undefeated with 49 wins.
