UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor may be given the opportunity to become a world champion in the sport of boxing.
Last week, a dream boxing match between McGregor and boxing legend Floyd “Money” Mayweather was made official.
While many boxing purists are upset that Mayweather’s 50th professional boxing win can come against a man who has never fought in a boxing match professionally, the WBC is considering making the fight for a championship.
“Maybe, I don’t know. I’m not against it. Of course, this is a WBC board decision but we have to celebrate that boxing is having world attention regardless,” Mauricio Sulaiman, the president of the WBC, told ESPN.
If the WBC would decide to make Mayweather vs. McGregor a title fight, it would be for the WBC Diamond Belt. This title is an honorary championship awarded to the winner of a historic fight. Past winners of the belt include Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
Mayweather vs. McGregor will take place Aug. 26 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
