The UFC returned to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year.
At UFC 212, UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway unified his title Interim UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway in the main event.
Before the main event took place, the UFC provided another night full of intriguing matchups.
UFC legend Vitor Belfort fought former title challenger Nate Marquardt in what could be the final UFC fight for the legend.
Marquardt landed the first leg kick to start the opening round. Marquardt engaged a clinch and used it to trip Belfort and get the fight to the ground. The referee eventually stood the fighters up. Belfort was patient for most of the round but had moments where he threw quick combinations. Towards the end of the round, both fighters landed clean punches. Marquardt also had success with his kicks to the legs and body.
Again, Marquardt started the round with a leg kick. Despite Marquardt throwing more volume, Belfort controlled the cage. Marquardt began landing kicks to Belfort’s head. Belfort then swarmed Marquardt and had him against the cage. Marquardt stayed calm and weathered the storm. Marquardt slowed the fight down and began landing combinations which resulted in Belfort being bloodied. Belfort landed a head kick, but Marquardt didn’t flinch. The round ended with both fighters landing a punch.
Belfort landed the first punch in the final round. Both fighters were more hesitant at the start of the round. Marquardt was more active, while Belfort waited for the perfect shot. Belfort landed a head kick later in the round. Marquardt went for a takedown, but Belfort stuffed it. Belfort continued having success with his striking. The fight ended with both fighters exchanging blows.
