Famous MMA referee “Big” John McCarthy has broken down the legalities of the referee’s stoppage during UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor’s last fight.
Last weekend, McGregor made his professional boxing debut. The referee stopped the fight in the 10th round and ruled the fight a TKO loss for McGregor.
On Wednesday, McCarthy shared why the referee immediately stopped the fight instead of giving McGregor a 10 count and a possibility to keep fighting.
“If Conor does not go down, or is not being held up by the ropes the referee cannot give him a count, they can only stop the fight,” McCarthy said on Twitter.
McGregor looked good early in his fight, but as time went on, fatigue became a major factor. As McGregor got tired, Floyd “Money” Mayweather became more aggressive. In round 10, Mayweather landed multiple shots until the referee stepped in and decided he had seen enough.
