UFC President Dana White announced that an interim title fight will take place in October.
While talking to ESPN, White said UFC lightweight contenders Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee will fight for an interim title.
White also said he the title fight will take place Oct. 7 at UFC 216.
The UFC has yet to announce an official main event for UFC 216. On Tuesday, MMA reporter Ariel Helwani said the UFC was struggling to book the main event since none of their champions were available. The UFC has a record of making interim title fights for pay-per-view events without any champions on the card.
Ferguson is currently on a nine-fight win streak. In his last fight, Ferguson won a decision against former UFC Lightweight Champion Rafael dos Anjos back in November.
Lee is on a five-fight win streak. He is coming off a submission win over Michael Chiesa back in June.
Dana White just said Ferguson vs. Lee for the interim lightweight title is happening. Was shaky on date but said he thought 216 in October.

It's a doozy. They've tried every available champ & for one reason or another no luck. Will have to pull a rabbit out of their hat for main. https://t.co/J4b6yFuqyg
