Even though the UFC has crowned two women featherweight champions, the UFC hasn’t done much to sign female 145-pound fighters.
Last month, at UFC 214, Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino won the vacant UFC Women’s Featherweight Championship.
In 2015, the UFC signed Justino, which started the promotions journey into the women’s featherweight division.
Justino’s first couple of UFC fights were at a 140-pound catchweight because the UFC wouldn’t sign any other featherweight fighters.
Earlier this year, the UFC crowned their first women’s featherweight champion without signing any other female featherweights. Instead, the UFC had two of their top women bantamweights move up and fight for the title.
At UFC 208, Germaine de Randamie won a decision against former UFC Women’s Bantamweight Champion Holly Holm. However, De Randamie refused to defend her title against “Cyborg” and was stripped of the championship.
In order to have Justino fight for the title, the UFC brought in Invicta Bantamweight Champion Tonya Evinger to fight her for the vacant championship.
Before Evinger was brought in, the UFC signed Invicta Featherweight Champion Megan Anderson to fight Justino. Anderson is the only other women’s featherweight to be signed by the UFC, but she was pulled from the fight for undisclosed reasons and has yet to fight in the UFC.
