Jo Jo Calderwood Admits To Battling With Alcohol And Depression

UFC strawweight contender Joanne Calderwood has admitted to dealing with issues with alcohol and depression.

During the lead up to her last fight, Calderwood did an interview with the BBC and discussed her past issues.

“I started drinking, and I guess it was part of me trying to escape from things and dealing with things,” Calderwood said. “It’s easier. It’s the same with anyone. If you ask them, ‘Why do you drink?’ It’s not because they enjoy it, it’s usually because we want to forget about the present or the past.”

Calderwood says she has given up on drinking alcohol and her life hasn’t been better.

“I gave up in December and I’ve never felt any better,” Calderwood said.

Last month, Calderwood lost a decision to Cynthia Calvillo in the co-main event of a UFC Fight Night in Glasgow, Scotland.

Despite the loss, Calderwood is still one of the top strawweight contenders in the UFC. She is currently ranked No. 10 in the official UFC women’s strawweight division.
