It may be quite awhile before UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley steps back into the Octagon.
The State of California has increased Woodley’s medical suspension following UFC 214 from seven days to 180.
Woodley’s increased suspension is due to a lingering shoulder injury. The UFC champion may require to get surgery and could be out of action for quite some time.
On Saturday, Woodley successfully defended his title by defeating Demian Maia in the co-main event of UFC 214 in Anaheim, California.
For 25 minutes, Woodley stopped all of Maia’s takedown attempts. He also was the better fighter when the two welterweights traded strikes.
This was Woodley’s third title defense. He won the title last July after knocking out Robbie Lawler. His first title defense was in November, but his fight with Stephen Thompson ended in a draw. In March, Woodley won the rematch by earning a decision win over Thompson.
As of now, there is no clear top contender for the UFC welterweight title. Woodley’s absence could give the division time to crown a deserving contender.
