Details have been released on how long UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones may be suspended for following his latest failed drug test.
On Tuesday, it was revealed Jones tested positive for a banned substance prior to his fight with Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.
After the news broke of Jones’ failed drug test, Jeff Novitzky, the UFC Vice President of Athlete Health and Performance, revealed how long Jones could be suspended for.
“Jon definitely has one penalty under the system. So the second penalty, if it were to come to that, basically doubles the amount of the first,” Novitzky said.
Novitzky went on to say that non-steroid substances result in a one-year suspension, while steroids can result in a two-year suspension. Since Jones tested positive for a steroid, and he already has one offense, he could be looking at a four-year suspension.
“It’s important to note that there is a lot of due process in the system,” Novitzky said. That’s why you see our statement, it’s relatively generic right now. Jon is afforded due process rights and those will be carried out in the coming months.”
