UFC superstar Conor McGregor seems to be on everyones radar. Boxing star Pauli Malignaggi has been angling for a fight with McGregor, along with long line of UFC fighters from various weight classes. Nate Diaz, Tony Ferguson, Khabib Nurmagomedov, have all been anxiously waiting for Conor to return to the octagon. Well, it looks like you can also add Georges St. Pierre to the same list.
McGregor and St. Pierre haven’t even competed in the same weight division outside of McGregor’s two epic encounters with Nate Diaz last year. For sure money is the true motivator here, but perhaps St. Pierre is being fueled by Conor’s previous comments regarding his association with the MMAFA fighters union.
“I’m watching this union thing, it like a press conference, and I’m like, what the f*ck is going on here? They’re standing up, they’re all wearing the same t-shirt. They’re saying, ‘Conor, please. Conor, please, you know what’s right. Help us out, Conor.’ And Georges [St-Pierre] is saying, ‘Conor’s a good person. I know he gets paid well, but he doesn’t get paid enough.’ And I’m like, what the f*ck are you talking about?
“The only reason you’re standing in the middle of that union is because you (GSP) couldn’t get the deal you want. You’re the fakest of everyone up there.”
GSP currently has his hands full with a title fight against UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping just around the corner, but McGregor’s training partner says it’s pretty likely that St. Pierre will call out McGregor if he wins at UFC 217.
Fellow UFC fighter and GSP training partner, Aubin-Mercier talked to TSN about the possibility.
“I think what will be probable is that he will call out Conor after,” Aubin-Mercier said. “That’s what I would do. I think for the UFC, it’s a really smart fight to do. It’s a win-win for them. Well, win-win, kind of, for short term.”
