Last weekend’s historic boxing match is coming close to breaking pay-per-view records.
Early numbers are already confirming that last Saturday’s fight sold over 4 million pay-per-views. With the current record being 4.6 million, the boxing match between UFC Lightweight Champion Conor McGregor and Floyd “Money” Mayweather could very well break the record by the time the official numbers come in.
The Associated Press reported on Friday, that the Mayweather vs. McGregor fight has sold over 4 million buys, which automatically makes it among the top two most bought pay-per-views in history.
The current pay-per-view record of 4.6 million is held by the 2015 boxing match between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.
The AP also reported that approximately 50 million people in just the U.S watched Saturday’s fight.
“It’s a little soon to be predicting a record,” Showtime Executive Stephen Espinoza told the AP. “But the record is definitely within reach.
“I’d absolutely call this a complete success. This was a fight that had massive expectations in both the fight itself and the business results. It lived up to those expectations in every respect.”
