At least one gunman has opened fire in New York City today, in lower Manhattan, and casualties are being reported.
This news is breaking and little is known at present, but this latest mass-shooting comes on the heels of the Vegas mass-shooting that pre-dated the UFC’s last pay-per-view, UFC 216.
It is currently unknown what kind of impact this will have on UFC 217 fight week. Stay tuned for that.
Here’s a report from NBC New York:
At least five people have been shot on the street in lower Manhattan, a few blocks north of the National September 11 Memorial, police sources tell News 4.
A large number of police vehicles could be seen near West Street and Chambers Street, which is near a community college, Stuyvesant High School, and a few blocks north of the National Sept. 11 Memorial.
Students from the top-ranked Stuyvesant High School and other witnesses in the area tweeted that they’d heard gunshots. A message has been left with the Department of Education.
The NYPD tweeted that a person is in custody, and police activity has shut down the area.
Meanwhile, the FDNY says emergeny personnel are responding to another call nearby for a report of multiple pedestrians struck. It’s not clear if the scenes are connected.
Update: Multiple media outlets are now reporting multiple casualties.
UPDATE 2: Shooter identified and arrested. The New York Post reports:
At least two people were fatally shot in Lower Manhattan Tuesday afternoon by a gunman firing from his truck, police sources said.
The gunman, who is in police custody, shot at least six people at West Street and Chambers Street, which is near Stuyvesant High School, at 3:15 p.m.
“What happened was there was a car crash… he came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. He was running around Chambers and somebody started to chase him,” said a 14-year-old Stuyvesant student. “I heard four to six gunshots – everybody starts running.”
Video of the scene shows at least two people lying limp in the street. Photos show a smashed up Home Depot rental truck.
Police shut down the FDR to rush victims to Bellevue Hospital.
