The UFC is potentially set to see a small resurgence of superstars make a return to the octagon. One of the promotion’s historically most dominant welterweight champions, Georges St-Pierre, is coming out of retirement to make a run at the middleweight division. On top of that, UFC megastar Conor McGregor is coming off of a TKO loss in his boxing debut. Now the UFC lightweight champion is likely heading for an octagon return. All of that in mind, fight fans may actually get to see these two MMA stars meet inside the octagon.
Georges St-Pierre is set to face UFC middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping at UFC 217. St-Pierre has also revealed that, if he defeats Bisping, he will be contractually obligated to unify his title in a fight against interim champion Robert Whittaker. That being said, UFC President Dana White has not ruled out the possibility of McGregor and St-Pierre throwing down sometime later down the road.
Speaking to TSN, Dana White offered his thoughts on the two fighters meeting inside the octagon.
“GSP would need to defend his title first at 185 [pounds] and Conor has some business to handle himself. It would be a year and a half down the road before we would even talk about that.”
Speaking on why fans always want to see “Notorious” throw down, White added:
“Everybody’s intriguing for Conor McGregor. I mean, if you look at Conor McGregor at 145, 155 and 170 [pounds], everything is intriguing.”
If the two fighters were to go toe-to-toe, Dana White has a few venues in mind.
“I don’t know where that would be. We could do it in Croke Park in Ireland, where there’s like 100,000 seats. You could do it here in Toronto, where we had 56,000 people, and you could do it in Vegas, which is always good, too.”
