Rory MacDonald earned a shot at the UFC welterweight title in 2015 when he faced off against reigning champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189. However, MacDonald suffered a TKO loss in the final round. Following the event, “Red King” has come forward to reveal that he believes his opponent was on performance enhancing drugs at the time. Now Lawler has come forward with a response of his own.
Speaking to TSN, Lawler said:
“I think he’s trying to figure out why things happened the way they happened and he’s finding a different way to cope with it.”
Rory MacDonald pointed out part of his reasoning for believing Lawler was on performance enhancing drugs was his ability to persist in the later rounds.
To that Lawler responded, “I mean, I was getting hurt, I got stung by a head kick and he cut my lip with an elbow, but all you have in the end is your will to fight.”
It’s unlikely the two MMA warriors will meet inside the cage again, as MacDonald has since signed with competing promotion Bellator MMA. The fighter will be taking on welterweight champion Douglas Lima on Jan. 20 in Inglewood, Calif.
