UFC Fighter Gets Benched Nine-Months For Using An I.V. For Rehydration

Mixed martial artist Kurt Holobaugh earned a stunning knockout finish over Matt Bessette at Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series earlier this summer. Now, it would appear that the fighter’s win has since been overturned.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission unanimously voted to suspend Kurt Holobaugh, as the fighter allegedly failed to disclose his IV usage. As reported by MMA Junkie, Holobaugh faces a nine month suspension and has been fined $750.

The suspension was retroactively initiated for July 11, Holobaugh once again eligible on April 11 of next year. During the NSAC meeting, over the phone, Holobaugh said “I do take full responsibility.”

The NSAC follows World Anti-Doping Association (WADA) guidelines, much of which has just been clarified in a recent update to their prohibited list, including IV usage requirements and CBD usage.

“While eliminating CBD as a banned substance, WADA has slightly relaxed its requirements for IV usage. Previously, it maintained a 50 mL cutoff for IV use that didn’t involve a hospital procedure. Athletes who did not receive a therapeutic-use exemption were subject to a disciplinary complaint. Now, the cutoff for IV “and/or injections of any substance” is 100 mL over a 12-hour period. Anything over that is prohibited at all times.”

Prior to competing on Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series, Holobaugh  was on a three fight winning streak. With all of his wins coming by a finish, Holobaugh defeated Gesias Cavalcante, Yosdenis Cedeno and Luciano dos Santos.
