Two UFC lightweights got pegged with the third slot on Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 119 main card in the form of Jim Miller vs. Francisco Trinaldo.
In the first round the two traded on the feet briefly, until a Trinaldo takedown got the fight to the mat. Miller scrambled, but was forced to play guard. He was down momentarily, Trinaldo landing punches from top position, but Miller got up, and the earned a takedown of his own. All takedowns are not created equal though, because Miller rode out the majority of the round from top, likely edging out the frame.
Round 2 was all Trinaldo, who up until about the 90 second mark on the clock, was the more effective striker of the two. With about 90-seconds left in the round Trinaldo took Miller down and dominated from the top position until the final bell.
In the third, a more fatgued Miller fell into the same traps as in the second. Trinaldo used his power advantage to win the standup exchanges, before eventually securing a takedown and riding out top position for the rest of the frame.
Result: Francisco Trinaldo def. Jim Miller via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
