Former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre finally made his big return to the octagon at UFC 217. The fighter put on a dominant performance in the UFC’s welterweight division during his run, earning a 12 fight winning streak. After a succesful defense of his title back in 2013, St-Pierre decided to go on a lengthy hiatus from mixed martial arts.
That being said, “Rush” decided to move up in weight and make his octagon return this year. For his big return, St-Pierre challenged UFC middleweight champion Michael “The Count” Bisping for his title. The two mixed martial arts veterans went toe-to-toe in the main event of UFC 217. The fight card took place inside the world famous Madison Square Garden Arena, for the mixed martial arts promotion’s second ever appearance in the New York stadium.
St-Pierre went on to choke out “The Count” for the middleweight title, putting the fighter among the four only UFC competitors to ever earn a title in multiple divisions. All of that in mind, St-Pierre’s interest in combat sports all start with one thing. “Rush” trained in Kyokushin karate.
