Fight fans were privileged to an exhilarating night of fights on Saturday, when the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) hosted UFC 217 inside the Madison Square Garden Arena in New York.
The exciting event included a three different title fights. In the first championship battle of the night, UFC strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk faced off against “Thug” Rose Namajunas.
Coming into the fight, Jedrzejczyk had never suffered a loss in her mixed martial arts career. Having garnered a 14 fight winning streak over some of the toughest competitors in the sport, Jedrzejczyk’s dominance in the UFC strawweight division seemed to be nearly certain. However, Namajunas stunned the New York crowd when she earned a knockout victory over the champion in a single round.
Speaking to Joe Rogan in her post-fight interview, the newly crowned champion said:
“This belt don’t mean nothing, just be a good person. That’s it. This is extra. This is awesome, but let’s just give each other hugs and be nice.”
