Cormier Calls Winning Fighter The Wrong Name In Post-Fight Interview, Issues Public Apology

Last night on FOX Sports 1, the UFC put on an exciting, action packed night of fights from Las Vegas. One of Friday night’s most notable moments happened after Lauren Murphy’s victory over Barb Honchak. Taking to his commentator duties, UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier mistakenly called the Murphy, ‘Barb’, and it sent a shockwave through the MMA world, forcing the champ to issue a public apology.

They can’t all be Joe Rogan after all.

The TUF finale event was supposed to feature Nicco Montano taking on Sijara Eubanks, but Eubanks was pulled from the card due to medical reasons at the last minute. Her loss was Roxanne Modafferi’s gain , as she got to realize a dream and fight for a UFC world title.

The last-minute shuffle to the fight card allowed Lauren Murphy to also step up on short notice for the Honchak scrap, as Murphy’s original opponent was unable to secure a visa for the card, and that originally forced Murphy out of fight night entirely.

Despite the setback, Murphy stayed ready and in fight shape, so when Roxanne got the call to step into main event duties, Murphy got a subsequent call to fight Roxanne’s original opponent in Barb Honchak.

Murphy defeated the UFC newcomer in a hard fight bout, but the headlines following her fight were not about her performance, and instead the bout received attention for D.C.’s historic mistake.  (Replay above)

Following the night, Daniel Cormier took to his verified Twitter account and issued a public apology for his televised mistake.

“U guys can call me whatever u want all night. Jon Jones , Alexander Gustafsson , anything. I apologize @LaurenMurphyMMA I am so sorry!!!” said Daniel Cormier on social media.
