The UFC cannot keep it’s facts straight when it comes to the upcoming UFC 223 main event for their lightweight world title.
Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov have been booked to fight each other, following the extended absence of Conor McGregor, but the confusion continues to spiral out of control.
UFC president Dana White revealed that the two lightweights will fight for the undisputed belt, however their marketing material proves otherwise.
Last week, the UFC boss caused a stir when he refused to strip Conor McGregor, but in the same breath confirmed Khabib vs. Ferguson was for Conor’s belt.
It’s a new first for the UFC, and they’re in very rare territory.
UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson touched on the situation yesterday on The MMA Hour, stating, “Yea it bothers me. It bothers the shit out of me. Straight up. Wouldn’t you? I’m the fucking champ and we don’t know if we’re fighting for the real belt or not.”
“What the fuck is that. Dana White is telling us one thing on one part of the curtain, and on the other side he’s saying, ‘No, Conor McGregor is the champion.’
“I love Dana, but what the fuck dude? Am in not the champ or am I the champ. Do you want to hype me up or do you not want to hype me up for this fight.”
And now there’s even more confusion on the matter, after a fan pointed out an obvious label for the event as an interim title fight, on official UFC marketing material.

And here’s another shot:

Now in an odd turn, the UFC has since changed the poster and removed the word interim from the title. So, maybe it is, and maybe it isn’t.
It just adds to the confusion of UFC 223.
Thoughts?
