In a new interview with CBS New York, UFC light-heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier discussed his grievances with the UFC’s new early morning weigh in policy.
Just as recently as last week we saw the effects the new policy has on some fighters. Most notably, UFC fan favorite Uriah Hall, who was sent to the hospital after a weight cut gone wrong, and broke out into seizure.
His fight was ultimately cancelled at the last minute due to his medical condition, and many attribute the misstep is due to these early morning weigh ins.
The UFC thought that by giving fighters more time to rehydrate before their fights, that this was the right move. But now, after 18 months of the experiment, the total is up to 51 fighters who missed weight. That’s 34 more than the 18 months prior to the early morning implementation.
D.C.’s remarks on the subject bring to light the issues with the UFC’s new policy, which were ultimately implemented by guys who don’t suffer through a weight cut.
Cormier stated, “Morning weigh-ins are tougher, you get no rest, not a fan, how do you sleep depleted and dehydrated, I wake up at 3am, a lot of people are struggling”
Is it time to end this practice?
