According to Yoel Romero’s post fight interview on FOX Sports 1, he broke his leg in the first round of his UFC 221 main event against Luke Rockhold.
Rockhold opened up the bout landing very hard leg kicks (highlights above). So hard in fact that after his second one, Luke’s leg was gushing blood.
The cage side commentating team made sure to note the brutal nature of the kicks and the blood, but Yoel and Luke continued with the bout unfazed.
Those kicks though, proved more damaging than originally thought, and Yoel Romero fought through it, even knocking Luke Rockhold out in the third round.
After the fight, Romero limped away from a lifeless Luke Rockhold, no longer poker facing his way through the pain.
When he gave his post fight interview he did so sitting on the ground, making Jon Anik kneel down to ask his questions.
On the UFC 221 post-fight show on FOX Sports 1, Yoel was seen in a wheelchair and confirmed that he broke his leg in the first round, after two kicks cracked him in the right spot.
It’s amazing he not only continued to fight on, but actually won.
Likely, a bitter pill for Luke to swallow.
