Veteran mixed martial arts referee Herb Dean has become a household name for fight fans as often the third man inside the octagon. Dean has refereed for numerous mixed martial arts promotions throughout his lengthy career in the sport, including an extensive history with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). That being said, Dean donned gloves of his own before ever deciding to enter the cage dressed in black.
Outside of his career as a referee, Dean used to be a professional mixed martial artist in his own right. Fighting for a handful of promotions, Dean ultimately put on a record of 2-3 during his run as a fighter.
In his professional MMA debut, Dean put on a dominant performance over Randy Halmot at Caged Beasts 6 back in 2001. The fight ultimately ended in a first round submission victory for Dean, offering an auspicious start to an otherwise unfortunately short career in fighting.
