UFC President Dana White has come forward with a statement concerning the potential stripping of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor’s title. Now the UFC head claims that “Notorious” will be stripped of his belt at UFC 223.
UFC interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson is set to face off against top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223. However, Dana White recently revealed that the two mixed martial arts warriors will be facing off for the undisputed title.
When asked if McGregor would be stripped of his belt, White did not offer a direct answer. Now the UFC President has come forward to clear the air.
Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, White offered an answer when asked if Conor McGregor would be stripped of his title at UFC 223.
“That’s exactly right: As soon as one punch is thrown, it’s on for the full title and it’s only fair. They’ve both worked their way up to No. 1 and No. 2. They deserve a shot.”
“This is good news for the fans. I always hear about, ‘What will you do if this guy leaves …’ This is a sport first. People leave, they’ve made money and moved on. It happens.”
UFC 223 goes down April 7 inside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The event will be featured live on pay-per-view.
