Boxing phenoms Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin are currently preparing for a highly anticipated rematch. That being said, it has since been revealed that Alvarez has failed a drug test.
Alvarez has come forward in a statement to fans to reveal that he has failed a drug test for performance enhancing drugs. However, the boxer claims the drug test was flagged due to contaminated meat.
The fighter failed a drug test for Clenbuterol, a banned substance often used to cut body fat and maintain muscle mass. With that in mind, Alvarez claims the substance entered his system through contaminated beef.
Alvarez believes the contamination was “consistent with meat contamination that has impacted dozens of athletes in Mexico over the last years.”
“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me.
“I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”
No word on how this impacts his upcoming rematch with Triple-G.
