Canelo Alvarez has suffered a failed drug test. Now Golden Boy Promotions has come forward with a statement on the matter.
Alvarez is currently deep in training for his highly anticipated rematch against WBA, WBC, IBF, and IBO title holder Gennady Golovkin. The two pugilist phenoms initially faced off back in 2017, with the match ultimately reaching a controversial draw decision.
On Monday, however, Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions announced that Canelo Alvarez has failed a drug test. The boxer has been flagged for the substance Clenbuterol, which is a banned substance often used to help cut fat and maintain muscle mass.
Alvarez has since claimed that the banned substance entered his system through contaminated beef. Consequently, Alvarez now plans to move his training camp from Mexico to the United States and has offered himself for a variety of VADA testing.
“I am an athlete who respects the sport and this surprises me and bothers me because it had never happened to me,” Canelo stated. “I will submit to all the tests that require me to clarify this embarrassing situation and I trust that at the end the truth will prevail.”
